How to Make Homemade Dental Chews: A Guide to Keeping Your Dog's Teeth Clean and Healthy

Dental health is important for dogs just as it is for humans. Poor oral hygiene can lead to a host of health problems, including gum disease, tooth decay, and bad breath.

One way to keep your dog's teeth clean and healthy is by giving them dental chews.

While store-bought dental chews can be expensive and filled with additives, making your own at home is easy and cost-effective.

Here's how:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of brown rice flour
  • 1/2 cup of fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup of fresh mint, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup of coconut oil, melted
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 1 egg

Instructions:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the brown rice flour, parsley, mint, and melted coconut oil.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk the egg and water together.
  • Gradually add the egg and water mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring until a dough forms.
  • Roll the dough out on a floured surface until it's about 1/4 inch thick.
  • Use a cookie cutter or knife to cut the dough into small, bite-sized pieces.
  • Place the pieces onto the prepared baking sheet and bake for 25 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
  • Allow the dental chews to cool completely before giving them to your dog.

Tips:

  • Parsley and mint are natural breath fresheners and can help keep your dog's breath smelling fresh.
  • Coconut oil has antimicrobial properties that can help prevent bacteria buildup in your dog's mouth.
  • Brown rice flour is a gluten-free alternative to wheat flour and is gentle on your dog's digestive system.

In conclusion, giving your dog a homemade dental chew every day can help keep their teeth clean and healthy, and it's a fun way to bond with your furry friend.
Plus, with all-natural ingredients, you can feel good about giving your dog a treat that's healthy and delicious.

I am making my second round of these. For me, the above recipe is too sticky and I add probably 1/2 cup to 1 cup more flour. I just keep adding and kneading until the dough is a little more dry so I can roll it out. Otherwise, I wouldn’t change a thing. My dogs enjoy them!
